Destroyer 666 black thrash live Glasgow 2018
Born in Australia, currently based in London, Deströyer 666 have gathered a cult following in the metal underground and the five albums they have released over the course of 20 years have all been highly rated by fans of dirty Slayer/Sodom/Venom-tainted blackened thrash. With high-quality support act in the shape of speed metallers from Evil Blood, the Scottish crowd was in for a nice treat for their ears this Sunday evening, expecting good amounts of sweet and blood to be spilled.
Originally from Croatia and now Scotland-bound, Evil Blood play a more melodic brand of speed metal, characterised by a number of fast riffs and cool guitar harmonies. With only one member of the original 1982 line-up still in the band (the singer/guitarist Denis Gabri? aka Bat Connan) the band played a short but intense set of nine tunes, showing top musicianship in numbers such as "Countess Laura Whore", "Sinful Nun", "Ave Satanas" or "S.A.D.O Violence". Their only release so far is a collection of songs released under various monikers, but the band should definitely get their act together and write a proper album. They have 35 years of experience, they clearly have the stage confidence and they know how to write a great tune. Why not take it further?

The headliner of the evening took to the stage with "Satan's Hammer", a fast number from their 1997 debut album and after one more classic song "A Breed Apart" they went for a short "let's promote the latest album" ride, attacking the fans with three dirty speedsters "Wildfire", "Traitor" and "Live and Burn". It seemed that the crowd knew the latest release quite well as they shouted the choruses along with K.K. Warslut, while the band were just charging their batteries with the energetic feedback. Throughout the rest of the set D666 unleashed upon us some fast, some very fast and some ultra-fast tunes, taken from all periods of the band's career, but they slowed down a few times as well, especially for the intros to the anthemic "hit" "I Am the Wargod" and the complex "Trialed By Fire" from the new EP. The setlist was rounded up with "Iron Fist" by a certain British rock legend and Exciter's speed metal hymn "Heavy Metal Maniac", where K.K. decided to lose the guitar and just focus on screaming his guts out.
The band that started as a project in the mid '90s quickly gained recognition and having witnessed them live I can understand why. With their classic studs, spikes & leather image plus cool stage setting details such as a goat's skull on the microphone, pentagrams on the bass drum covers and the backdrop from the last album, they simply ripped the tiny venue apart. It was a furious, murderous set, pure pleasure to watch and listen to and I'm hoping the foursome will be getting back to Scotland very soon.
