It looks like the remaining members of this Germany-born supergroup didn’t get discouraged by Herman Frank’s (ex-Accept) departure at all, as they came-up with a bunch of very strong ideas again, as good (if not better) as what they offered on their debut release three years ago. One look at the cover art will give you an immediate hint of what you can expect to hear on this release, as it screeeaaams old-school and that’s exactly what the band set-out to do here. Think British metal circa 1985 with Schmier’s (Destruction) raspy vocals on top and you have the rough idea of what Pänzer is about. But while many actual ‘80s bands put out albums that sound tired and dated, “Fatal Command” injects your brain with a generous dose of metallic freshness, with strong hooks being one of this release’s top selling points. The guys went for even more guitar harmonies this time around and choosing the perfect opener in “Satan’s Hollow”, a fast-paced tune with nice lead-guitar work going on under the memorable chorus, they made sure to have no weak moments on the album. The material feels very even throughout, turning more towards the Maiden-esque aesthetics in “Scorn and Hate” and exploring more modern territories in “Mistaken”, with Schmier’s usual dose of politics in the anthemic “We Can Not Be Silenced”. It’s obvious that re-inventing the wheel wasn’t part of their plan at all and yes, you can argue that it’s all been written and recorded before, but if Saxon, Accept, Priest or Maiden rock your boat, buying “Fatal Command” is definitely not a bad idea.
