Ram Rod cover
The Ram guys have never strayed from the once-chosen path and even though they’ve been progressing with each release (especially when it comes to the song-writing quality), they have always stayed true to their roots. The idea for “Rod” was something new for them, with the second half of the album telling a story of a character called Ramrod the Destroyer so, what we’re offered here is an epic mini-concept in six chapters, but still in the best Ram tradition. The spoken interludes don’t really add much to the game, but the actual songs are filled with the proper amount of traditional metallic goodness the Swedes have been feeding to us for almost 15 years now. The first part of the album is, again, Ram at their best, with four more numbers, including one of the best tunes they’ve ever written in the complex and epic “Gulag”. In general, all ingredients required to cook a traditional heavy metal dish are here. Great riffs, nice guitar harmonies, quality soloing, memorable but not cheesy hooklines and Oscar’s multi-octave wailing make for a top- quality release and “Rod” is another album where the band are not forcing anything, just forging their pure heavy metal the way it should be forged. I sincerely hope that all our readers are familiar with these Swedes’ past work, but if that’s the first time you’re hearing of them (shame on you) and Judas Priest/Mercyful Fate inspired metal with an instantly recognisable twist is up your alley, “Rod” should be the next album for you to check out.
Rating: 8.5
